Grading
Policy
Each project
receives at least two letter grades. This enables the student to show his
knowledge of the art principle being taught, as well as his overall execution of
the medium. The student that excels in design and creativity, yet falls
short on the actual construction of the project, is not entirely
penalized. Likewise, the student that has difficulty with originality, and
yet is a perfectionist in display, is able to boost his/her grade.
Each project is to be turned in on the due date for grading (project grades do
not "god down" because they are late). The student may, at that
time, accept the grade given or rework the project once more, making the
necessary corrections and resubmit it for an improved grade (up-to 3 weeks prior
to the semester report cards.)
PRINCIPLE
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF ART 1-2
1. To provide opportunities for self-discovery and creative
expression for all students. Students in special programs will benefit
from experiences in Art 1-2. Artistically and/or mentally gifted and
talented minors, students with special needs, and the bilingual-bicultural
students will be able to expand their visual and aesthetic potentials.
2. To develop and expand visual arts knowledge and skills to
express ideas imaginatively, the students will recognize the importance of
personal experiences and respect the originality in their own artwork as well as
that of others.
3. The student will understand that art reflects, records, and
shapes history and plays a role in every culture, through an exposure to basic
art history and cultural art.
4. The student will develop a base for making informed
aesthetic judgment, through "hands-on" projects dealing with a wide
variety media (i.e., water color, ink overlay, pencil sketch, figure drawing,
ceramic, gluing, etc.), and experience student critique of current class
projects.
5. To develop the vocabulary in art of every student through
repeated exposure of terminology and testing that exposure via exams.
6. To support all California State, Los Angeles County, and
West Covina Unified School District policy governing art education as well as
overall educational guidelines.
As a final note... I appreciate the encouragement and the enthusiasm of
all parents and guardians, and sincerely hope that you visit our art classes at
West Covina High School at anytime (I love to show-off my beautiful students!!!).
Know that you are welcome to drop-in unannounced (with office permission, of
course) to observe.
GRADING
PROCEDURE
Letter grades for projects receive a numerical value to enable an average to be
determined for report cards. The following is the numerical breakdown:
A = 12 A-
= 11 B+ = 10 B = 9 *Extra
Credit is always offered to boost a border-line grade B- = 8
(i.e., from a B+ to an A-) C+ = 7 C = 6 C- = 5 D+
=
4 D = 3 D- = 2 F = 1
